Online since 1996I was Project Leader of Termite Research in the Kruger National Park. My duties were to determine and quantify the distribution, density, biomass, food consumption and genetic relatedness of mound-building termites in the northern KNP by means of extensive fieldwork, laboratory and biostatistical analysis, as well as write-up, presentation and publication of the original data.

At least ten 2 ha belt-transects were undertaken in each of the northern landscape zones of the KNP. Termite mounds encountered were recorded and their activity determined by means of digging. It is estimated that approximately 1,1 million active mounds occur in the northern KNP (approximately 47 % of all mounds in that area), with an overall density of 1,1 active mounds per hectare. The main mound-building genera are Macrotermes (accounting for 62,4 % of all active mounds in the northern KNP), Cubitermes (29,8 %), Amitermes (4,3 %), Odontotermes (2,1 %) and Trinervitermes (1,4 %). Macrotermes has an average mound density of 0,73 per hectare and Cubitermes 0,33 per hectare. Macrotermes natalensis and M. ukuzii are the dominant species with 0,27 and 0,25 mounds per hectare. The number of termite mounds is in some cases related to rainfall. Macrotermes natalensis density increases with approximately 0,0005 active mounds per hectare per millimetre in higher rainfall areas, provided that mounds occur. Macrotermes preferred sandy, granitic soils over basaltic clay. Undulating topography is also preferred to concave flood plains. Macrotermes ukuzii is more tolerant of clay soils than M. natalensis. Cubitermes favours the Nwambiya Sandveld (zone 32). Mounds of this genus in the Far North are highly concentrated on the Gaudam and Moriah soil series of the Hutton form, suggesting that these termites prefer very sandy soils with medium to coarse particles.

Food for thought (not the termites, though!): "You own the cosmos - You made everything in it, everything from atom to archangel." (The Message, p. 779) We know about atoms, right? But do we know about angels...

ANGELIC FORCES (Collins English Dictionary, sense 1; [ ] - inserted by the author): "Classes of spiritual beings attendant upon God. In medieval angelology they are divided by rank into nine orders [in decreasing authority and/or splendour]: cherubim [or cherubs ('gerubs' in Afr.), having two to four wings, usually a means of transport, i.e. mountable creatures - 2 Sam. 22: 11; Psalm 18: 10; Ezek. 10: 8, 14, 20-22]; seraphim [or seraphs ('serafs' in Afr.), creatures having six wings, usually worshipping and surrounding God's throne - Isaiah 6: 2, 3]; thrones, dominations (or dominions) [usually of darkness - Col. 1: 13]; virtues [I don't believe virtues to be an order of creatures - see Mark 5: 30; Luke 6: 19, 8: 46; Phil. 4: 8; 2 Pet. 1: 3, 5]; powers, principalities (or princedoms) [principalities are demons according to Rom. 8: 38 NIV]; archangels [e.g. Michael - Dan. 12: 1; Jude 9; Rev. 12: 7], and angels [assumed to have no wings and fulfilling a messenger role throughout Scripture, e.g. Gabriel - Dan. 8: 16, 9: 21; Luke 1: 19, 26]." Also see 1 Cor. 15: 24; Eph. 1: 21, 3: 10, 6: 12; Col. 1: 16, 2: 15 across translations. According to the Amplified Bible, angels are said to be messengers of God (Rev. 2: 8) and the apostles special messengers (Rev. 2: 2). God is spirit (Isaiah 31: 3; John 4: 24). A cherub has two faces - man and lion (Ezek. 41: 18, 19). Cherubim have four - cherub, man, lion, and eagle (Ezek. 10: 14). Man can take on angelic features (Acts 6: 15) and vice versa (Heb. 13: 2). Angels are metaphysical in that they appear and disappear swiftly and suddenly (Dan. 9: 21; Acts 12: 10). Angels can be powerful (2 Thess. 1: 7; Rev. 8: 8, 9), mighty (Rev. 18: 21), authoritative (Rev. 16: 5, 18: 1, 2), destroying (2 Chron. 32: 21; Isaiah 37: 36; Acts 12: 23; 1 Cor. 10: 10; etc.), and fearful (e.g. 1 Chron. 21: 16). Satan can masquerade as an angel of light (2 Cor. 11: 14), yet one is adequate for his arrest (Rev. 20: 1-3).

SATAN AND HIS FALLEN ANGELS (Rev. 12: 9): Satan has his seat in Pergamos/Pergamum/Bergama (Rev. 2: 12, 13; Collins English Dictionary) near Smyrna/Izmir, Turkey and the island Lesbos/Lésvos, Greece (Collins World Atlas). Modern Turks are said to be descendents of ancient Philistines (also see 1 Chron. 1: 12; Rev. 20: 8) and female homosexuality/lesbianism to have originated from this island! Not far from here, is Sidon/Säida of ancient Phoenicia or modern Lebanon (CED). This city/people was ordained a guardian cherub, but later demolished (e.g. Ezek. 28). What are your views? [Could be a foreshadowing of the Beast]

PIERCING THE DARKNESS by Frank E Peretti (1989 Minstrel, Eastbourne): "Like a living parable of modern humanity's search for meaning, Sally Roe's quest for inner peace exposes the most frightening war of all: the battle for the human soul." [Literary critique: Where did Sally get cooking oil to slip Von Bauer's ring off her finger?]

POWERFUL EFFECT OF DIVINE PRAYER: Celestial action is immediately engaged at the moment of prayer: "While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel and making my request to my God for his holy hill - while I was still in prayer, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice. He instructed me and said to me, 'Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding. As soon as you began to pray, an answer was given, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed [Isaiah 66:2b; 1 Tim. 6:6]. Therefore, consider the message and understand the vision...' " (Dan. 9: 20-23 NIV)

WORD OF HEED TO THOSE WHO PROLIFICALLY REVERT TO LAWSUITS: "If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, appoint as judges even men of little account in the church! I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? But instead, one brother goes to law against another - and this in front of unbelievers!" (1 Cor. 6: 1-6 NIV)

"And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever." (Isaiah XXXII: 17)

"I ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit - not a brute strength but a glorious inner strength - that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in... Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.

Glory to God in the church!
Glory to God in the Messiah, in Jesus!
Glory down all the generations!
Glory through all millennia! Oh, yes!"

(Eph. 3, The Message, p. 480)
